NEWPORT RECEIVES $250,000 SRTS GRANT

The City of Newport and Newport Schools has been awarded a $250,000 Safe Routes to School Grant.

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet granted the funds to the city and school district and a plan will take shape under the management of Southbank Partners, which helped with the grant application.

Southbank Partners President Jack Moreland announced the grant on Wednesday, February 17th. “We submitted pictures of the sidewalks around all the schools.” “We made our case.”

Engineering will begin as soon as possible with hopes of some construction underway this summer.

The $250,000 was the maximum grant allowance for the program it will cover 100 percent of the work. Several area in the city will be impacted, particularly Saratoga Street and Wildcat Drive. Sidewalks leading to all of the schools are in the plan to be fixed.

State Representative Dennis Keene, D-Wilder, helped in securing the funding for the improvement projects.
